Not Bad For A Hazy Day

Sydney Morning Herald

Friday March 24, 1995

DONNA REEVES

The thick grey haze that lingered over Sydney yesterday was not as bad as it looked, the Environment Protection Authority says.

While the city yesterday recorded the second most polluted day this month, the pollution indexes in three regions just tipped the medium range.

A spokesman for the authority, Mr John Dengate, attributed the smog to the still days. "It's always the weather. Output changes very slowly over time, and when it (pollution) jumps up, it's because there's been no wind."

Previous hazy days this month have been attributed to water attaching to pollution particles, making them look bigger and refracting light to make it look brown.

This type of smog generally clears by about 11.30 am when the sun causes the water to evaporate, Mr Dengate said.

He said that generally, the level of air pollution in the State was begining to fall.
